The decision to establish the holiday was made in April 2008 at a meeting of the coordinators of SPARE (School Project for Application for Resources and Energy), an international ecological network "School Project on the Use of Resources and Energy", held in Kazakhstan. About 20 countries wished to take part in the event.
On the International Day of Energy Saving, all countries, where this holiday is celebrated, hold events to inform people about the importance of saving energy resources, energy saving methods and existing renewable energy sources, thematic conferences, exhibitions and actions, lessons in educational institutions, dedicated to the topic of energy saving.
The purpose of the annual campaign “Belarus is an energy efficient country” is to raise awareness of people about possible ways and methods of increasing the efficiency of energy resources use, including in everyday life, which is one of the important measures in improving the welfare of citizens and economic growth in the country as a whole.
More information about the campaign can be found on the website of the Department of Energy Efficiency: http://energoeffekt.gov.by/ in "Energy saving in simple words/Tips", and social videos on energy saving are available on the official YouTube channel of the Department.
