Belarus expects to give impetus to the development of nuclear technologies

Written by Department of information and public relations

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko met with President of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" Mikhail Kovalchuk today, BelTA has learned.

“This meeting, as it is often said, can become historic, because it will give an additional impetus to the development of nuclear technologies in Belarus,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

The head of state noted that Russian scientists occupy leading positions in the world - from the peaceful atom to the most modern scientific developments. Russians are the main partners of Belarusian scientists in many studies. In the field of using nuclear energy, the countries see great prospects for joint cooperation.

“Once I visited our nuclear center in Sosny (Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research. – BelTA`s note). I watched it very carefully, I still keep an eye on it. To be honest, I keep thinking about how we could activate in this center," the President said. In his opinion, the Institute in Sosny is of great value and has scientific potential.

In February, the Kurchatov Institute and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus signed a cooperation agreement. For its implementation, a draft roadmap for cooperation until 2030 has been developed. “You should know that I will support all proposals. I know that, in my opinion, you have developed a union program out of 44 events,” the head of state added. Alexander Lukashenko also noted the special role of the State Secretary of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev in the development of cooperation in these areas.

The Kurchatov Institute provided support to Belarusian colleagues in the construction of the nuclear power plant. “You have taught us a lot. We are ready to build these stations,” the President stressed. “At those stations that are being built (by the Russians. – BelTA`s note), we can take part, not to mention the territory of Russia, if such nuclear power plants are built."

“In fact, there are a lot of questions,” the President summed up. “I want this meeting to be historic. From this we start some serious countdown for the development of nuclear energy in Belarus.”
