Safeguarding radiation safety

The Environmental Radiation Monitoring Laboratory of the Radiation Safety Department at RUE “Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant” has successfully undergone re-accreditation by Belarusian State Centre for Accreditation.

An expert commission confirmed that the laboratory’s operations fully comply with the tough international and national requirements of the GOST ISO/IEC 17025-2019 standard.

Accreditation is the state's official recognition that a laboratory is technically competent, possesses modern, verified equipment and highly qualified personnel, and is authorized to issue legally valid and reliable test results.

The certificate of conformity is issued for a period of five years. Upon the expiration of this term, laboratories are required to undergo a complex re-accreditation procedure.

During this process, experts re-verify the entire workflow—from sample collection, subsequent preparation, and the measurement itself to mathematical data processing and the official issuance of results.

The successful completion of yet another inspection demonstrates that radiation monitoring at the Belarusian NPP is conducted at the highest level at all stages, ruling out errors and misinterpretations of the results.

Belarusian NPP conducts radiation monitoring at 14 unique ecosystem sites, assessing 51 parameters and technological operations, including field sampling.

Radiation monitoring nvolves absolutely all key areas: the atmosphere and precipitation; water resources; land and swamps; detailed analysis of soils (including inhabited areas), wild berries, mushrooms, plants, ground-level vegetation and wood; the testing of local food products and agricultural raw materials.

The range of measured characteristics includes both general parameters (total alpha and beta activity, gamma dose rate, and alpha and beta particle flux density) and the determination of the activity of radionuclides that are difficult to analyze: strontium-90, strontium-89, tritium, and carbon-14.

Thanks to its confirmed accreditation, Belarusian NPP guarantees absolute transparency, independence, and impeccable accuracy regarding radiation safety monitoring data in the area where the nuclear power plant is located.
